Moldova is a parliamentary republic with a directly elected president. President Maia Sandu was re-elected in November 2024. Her Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) kept a single-party majority in the September 2025 parliamentary election. Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu resigned in July 2026, and Parliament approved a new government led by Vasile Tofan on 21 July 2026. EU accession is the government’s central objective. Moldova became a candidate country in June 2022 and accession negotiations opened in June 2024. Four of the six negotiating clusters were open by 13 October 2026, and the government aims to conclude negotiations by 2028. Trade with the EU runs under a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area, and an EU Growth Plan supports reforms. Energy security, including reduced dependence on Russian gas and closer links with Romania, remains a priority. The status of the Transnistria region is unresolved. Key regulators include the National Bank of Moldova and the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE).
