The Gambia is a presidential republic in which the President is both head of state and head of government. President Adama Barrow has held office since January 2017 and is seeking a third term in the election on 5 December 2026. The country is still governed by the 1997 Constitution, which sets no presidential term limit, after the National Assembly rejected a new draft constitution in July 2025. National Assembly elections follow in April 2027 and local government elections in mid-2027. The Gambia has an IMF Extended Credit Facility approved in January 2024, alongside a Resilience and Sustainability Facility. The IMF completed the fifth ECF review in July 2026 and projects growth of 4.7 per cent in 2026, after 6 per cent in 2025. The Gambia is a member of ECOWAS, the African Union, the Commonwealth and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Transitional justice following the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission, including a special tribunal agreed with ECOWAS, remains on the agenda.
